Information about La Oliva

The well-kept, clean-looking town of La Oliva, with its approximately 1,200 inhabitants, is surrounded by large, beautiful olive trees, hence its name. La Oliva is also the administrative center of one of Fuerteventura's six municipal districts. Like everywhere else on Fuerteventura, La Oliva is also busy building. Mostly holiday homes and second homes are being built here.
There are many restaurants and shops, a hairdresser, a pharmacy, and even a swimming pool in La Oliva.
Just outside La Oliva, on the eastern edge of the town, is the "Casa de los Coroneles" (House of the Colonels). This fortress-like building is striking for its numerous windows and wooden balconies. The Cabrera Béthencourt family commissioned its construction and was the residence of the island's highest commander until the 19th century.

History
La Oliva was founded in the 17th century amidst numerous olive trees. In 1708, the town became an important military base for a commander-in-chief who settled there. From 1835 to 1860, the town was the island capital of Fuerteventura.
