Information about the village of La Oliva
The beautiful and interesting small town of La Oliva is located directly south of Villaverde in the north of the island of Fuerteventura. La Oliva can be reached from Puerto del Rosario via the FV10.
The well-kept, clean-looking town of La Oliva with its approximately 1,200 inhabitants is surrounded by large, beautiful olive trees, hence its name. La Oliva is also the administrative seat of one of Fuerteventura's six municipal districts. Like everywhere else on Fuerteventura, construction is taking place in La Oliva. Mostly holiday homes and second homes are being built here.
There are many restaurants and shops, a hairdresser, a pharmacy and even a swimming pool in La Oliva.
Just outside of La Oliva on the eastern edge of the town is the "Casa de los Coroneles" (=House of the Colonels). The fortress-like building impresses with its large number of windows and wooden balconies. The Cabrera Béthencourt family commissioned the construction and it was the seat of the highest commander on the island until the 19th century.
Bus/Taxi
There is a large bus stop. The best way to find bus schedules is to look in island magazines or ask the bus driver.
History
La Oliva was built in the 17th century in the midst of numerous olive trees. In 1708 the town became an important military base for a commander in chief who settled there. From 1835 to 1860 the town was the island capital of Fuerteventura.
