The historic town of Betancuria is considered "the most beautiful place in Fuerteventura". When the pirates destroyed the city in the 16th century, the inhabitants of Betancuria had to renovate the city (if they didn't do so, they faced 15 years imprisonment!). Today the city adorns itself with its white houses between the many large palm trees and radiates peace and idyll. Very good restaurants and souvenir shops are in town. In Betancuria you should look for a parking space near the church and then explore the town and the center on foot.

The city of Betancuria has been the island's capital since it was founded by Jean de Béthencourt in 1404. Despite the decision to choose an inland location as the capital, the inhabitants were not protected from pirates. The city center of Betancuria was badly damaged and the locals had to constantly rebuild their decaying houses. Around 1834 Betancuria was replaced as the island's capital by Antigua and eventually Puerto del Rosario was chosen as the capital.
Because of the historical events, Betancuria is now a listed building.
