Information about the village of La Oliva
The beautiful and interesting small town of La Oliva is located directly south of Villaverde in the north of the island of Fuerteventura. La Oliva can be reached from Puerto del Rosario via the FV10.
Information about La Oliva
The well-maintained, clean-looking town of La Oliva, with its approximately 1,200 inhabitants, is surrounded by large, beautiful olive trees, hence its name. La Oliva is also the administrative center of one of Fuerteventura's six municipalities. As is the case throughout Fuerteventura, there is a lot of construction going on in La Oliva. Holiday homes and second residences are predominantly being built here.
La Oliva offers many restaurants and shops, a hairdresser, a pharmacy, and even a swimming pool.
Just outside La Oliva, on the eastern edge of town, is the "Casa de los Coroneles" (House of the Colonels). This fortress-like building is striking for its numerous windows and wooden balconies. The Cabrera Béthencourt family commissioned the construction, and it served as the residence of the island's highest-ranking commander until the 19th century.
Bus/Taxi
A large bus stop is available. Bus schedules can be found in island magazines, or you can ask the bus driver.
History
La Oliva originated in the 17th century amidst numerous olive trees. In 1708, it became an important military base for a commander-in-chief who established his residence there. From 1835 to 1860, the town was the capital of Fuerteventura.
