Information about La Caldereta
La Caldereta, a small village in the municipality of La Oliva, has its roots in local agriculture and livestock farming. The settlement is situated in the "Llanos del Palo" area, along the middle section of the Barranco de Tinojay ravine. This ravine, which originates near Vallebrón, was once a significant settlement area for the indigenous people of northern Fuerteventura; the "Mahos" left their mark here by adorning the rock faces with engravings—predominantly depicting ships and geometric patterns. La Caldereta is a dispersed settlement that likely emerged as a result of population growth in the 18th century. This growth was fostered by an economic upswing driven by the export of agricultural products (such as orchil, barilla, and grain), thriving goat farming, and early attempts at cochineal cultivation. These factors led to an expansion of cultivated land and the establishment of small settlement clusters such as La Caldereta, Peña Erguida, and Manta—though the latter two no longer exist today.
