Information about La Oliva
The well-maintained, clean-looking town of La Oliva, with its approximately 1,200 inhabitants, is surrounded by large, beautiful olive trees, hence its name. La Oliva is also the administrative center of one of Fuerteventura's six municipalities. As is typical throughout Fuerteventura, La Oliva is experiencing a construction boom, primarily with holiday homes and second residences.
La Oliva boasts numerous restaurants and shops, a hairdresser, a pharmacy, and even a swimming pool.
Just outside La Oliva, on the eastern edge of town, lies the "Casa de los Coroneles" (House of the Colonels). This fortress-like building is distinguished by its many windows and wooden balconies. Commissioned by the Cabrera Béthencourt family, it served as the residence of the island's highest-ranking commander until the 19th century.
Bus/Taxi
A large bus stop is available. Bus schedules can best be found in island magazines, or you can ask the bus driver.
History
La Oliva originated in the 17th century amidst numerous olive trees. In 1708, it became an important military base for a commander-in-chief who settled there. From 1835 to 1860, the town served as the capital of Fuerteventura.
